I’m BAAAaaaack!

After some technical difficulties, a busy schedule, and a blond moment, I finally got rid of that stupid redirect error!!!

I am sitting at my favorite haunt, TCC, smoking a new Rocky Patel Summer Collection robusto.  We’ve not been able to come over here for about a month or so and boy, were we going through withdrawl!!!  As for the RP Summer, I highly recommend it…however I also would suggest buying a few to stash for some age.  I think in a few months it will knock your socks off!  Unlike the others in the season collection, this one has a huge presence of that original Rocky signature flavor.  As soon as you light it, you know its an RP!  It very nicely constructed….as I’ve always found his cigars to be.  It has some woody/cedar notes to it…not too much, just enough to make it noteworthy.  About 2/3 through, it showed me a good coffee flavor .  I didn’t nub this one, but I enjoyed it up to about an inch.

Well, time to take hubby home for a nap after a hard morning .  Have a great day all!!!!

Well, the best laid plans…..

Okay…so I’ve been so NOT posting here as I had hoped. I’ve got this painful addiction to Facebook now….like I have time to putz on that! In addition to all the new and unusual things going on in my life…add the Notary Public commission my employer has sponsored me for. I am ready to take the final exam…just waiting for a peaceful moment. Okay, well I’ll settle for a not-chaotic moment! LOL
The weather was nice enough to delude me into thinking it could be spring. We sat out on the patio twice today smoking cigars. This morning we started with Spirit of Cuba habano robustos. For a cheap smoke, they are really nice. I don’t care for the naturals, but the habano babies sit really well with a nice cup ‘o coffee. Then we picked up a couple of Fuente’s at the beer distributor with our case of MGD 64. I highly recommend the beer for anyone doing the low carb thing. Good flavor. The Fuentes, however, were a bizarre purchase. We got them out to the car and discovered that the bands were photocopied! Interestingly enough, they were triple capped and put together quite like some that we only appropriate for special occasions. ;) He lit his and a wonderful smoke wafted over to my side of the car and the short trip home became a bit too long because I really wanted to light mine up…but not while driving. We broke out a few beers and sat out on the patio again with these peculiarly unidentified cigars. The burn was flawless and the flavor was consistent…very similar to H. Upmann. The ash was a nice light gray and held in place until tapped. A very pleasant cigar for the small price we paid…even if they weren’t “Fuente”.
This evening’s choice for the evening teleherf was Oliva. Chris opted for a Flor de Oliva Gigante, Jeff opted for the FDO Toro (both Sumatra) and I dug out a Oliva V torpedo that I’ve had aging in the drawer for a month or so. Man, what a treat! Oliva never lets me down, no matter which one I smoke.
I suppose I should update on what all has gone on here lately. Chris is off work with a work-related head injury that happened at the end of September. His daughter moved in with us in January to take a break from school/life and get some direction…little did we all know how much we were going to need her here! They say all things happen for a reason. Boy, if that isn’t an example!!! She is working for me part-time to put back a little money. With both of our schedules being flexible, (her’s more so than mine) it works out that we can take turns driving him to 3 days of rehab. I take him to most of the other doctor appointments on the other days. I don’t know what I’d do without her! I’m probably not the best influence on her…she can hang right with me in the sarcasm department! But having her here helps keep Chris’ spirits up a little and the laughs we have together are good for all of us, I think. She has had many opportunities to have some long talks with both of us. I hope we’ve been able to give something of value back to her other than room and board. If nothing else, we have all become a lot closer than we ever were.
Despite being asthmatic, the cigar smoke doesn’t bother her much…and that’s been great since the weather has sucked up until this weekend. I try not to smoke near her and I usually won’t light up a cigar at the same time he does. Our house is quite small and it doesn’t take long to fill the room with a cloud.
So anyway, there is no expected change to our schedule any time in the near future. Rehab has indicated that he most likely regain most of the speech and dexterity back, but it will take a long time to get there. I’ll close for now. Check me out on Facebook, Myspace, or Twitter.
Take care and I’ll hope to update soon!

2009 Cigar Smoking Strategy and a new review!

I’ve decided to do something a little different during my weekly visits to the Tobacco Company.  Dave and Greg have so many different kinds of cigars; tons of which are by the makers you see all the time.  They also have a really nice selection of many that I have not heard of….strategically placed throught the humidor.  I’m going in search of these not-so-popular cigars to put their names out there for people to see.

I happened across one today…a Savinelli Nicaragua Special Selection 2005.  He had toros and robustos.  These babies were stuck behind a stack of assorted boxes of the more popular sellers but I reached in to the robusto box….I had to blow the dust off the cello to even see what the wrapper looked like.  It appeared to be an exquisitely made cigar with a nearly veinless wrapper.  Upon that observation, I decided that was the smoke for today.  It was moderately priced at 6.75 which is right around the price I usually average in my cigar choices.  It looked to be about a 5 x 5o average size robusto.  I slid the cello off to find a beautifully oily wrapper that was just as smooth as it appeared through the dust.

The pre-light draw slightly sweet, like tea, and I knew I had a potential winner in my hands.  I generally expect the initial quarter inch or so to pretty much suck, as has been my experience with many cigars regardless of how much I loved or hated them at the end with few exceptions.  But this one lit right up with a sweet spicey flavor, I had to stop and admire it again with anticipation of what was to come.  The burn was pretty even throughout the cigar…I had to touch up twice, but I was also sitting by the front entrance catching the draft from all that passed through so I’m wasn’t too put out by that.  There were no stems or draw issues that would indicate the burn would have been bad had I been sitting in a not-so-drafty area.  It held a nice firm ash to about the inch mark or so.  I don’t generally trust ash much past that but in this case I had to actually bump the ash off each time which led me to believe it probably would have held on for longer than an inch.  It had ample smoke and the flavor was consistently sweet and spicey throughout the cigar with the spice building for the last two inches.  I had no problems with the wrapper and the band popped off nicely without affecting  the underlying tobacco.  The band, by the way, was simply beautiful.  It was a festive shade of red with gold embossing…understated but elegant.  I played with the band for a while as I continued smoking.  There was something appealing about the feel of the band…I know that probably sounds silly, but it didn’t feel cheap.  It was quality paper that was almost like satin to my fingertips.  Normally I toss the band on the table or in my purse to add to my collection without a second thought.  I continued smoking until I reached about 3/4 inch or less.  I don’t usually get that far on the average cigar, so to me that is noteworthy.    It was a good medium smoke leaning towards full, but by no means overwhelming.  I totally enjoyed this cigar and felt compelled to check it out on the blackberry to see what it’s “scoop” was.  It turns out that it comes from the Oliva factory….which, with the quality, didn’t surprise me.  I’ve had very few issues with Oliva cigars and I’m usually very satisfied with their blends.

I would highly recommend finding yourself one if you like a little spice in your life…and your cigars!

Sitting on the edge of my seat….what will 2009 bring?

I have to say, 2008 has been an interesting year.  So many life changes, added friendships, deleted friendships, new experiences, and many cigars smoked during all of it!!

The last quarter has been occupied with family issues…the little spare time I had to blog up until then has been otherwise occupied.  As I sit here tonight trying to catch up with the world, I’ve had a moment to reflect on all that has happened and wonder what opportunities fate has in store for me in the rapidly approaching new year.

I sat today at TCC, smoking a Montesino robusto, watching the snow that was caught up in the gusts of wind.  I likened my life this past year to one of the snowflakes, never really sitting still for any length of time, waiting to see where the next wind blast would take it.

Numerology and astrology forecasts indicate big changes, opportunities, etc.  I wonder sometimes if I’ll be intuitive enough to recognize an open door when it appears…or will I step through the door that opens to a cliff!  (Yes, too much Bugs Bunny as a child.)

But for now, I’ll put all that deep thought aside since it’s giving me a headache and enjoy ringing in 2009 with a good strong drink and a gifted RyJ from a far away land…..

Hang on to your seats, folks…..2009 is about to arrive!

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!!!!

Cigar “rights”?????

A question was posed as a contest on Social Cigar that inspired me to wander off on a typing tangent again.

“What Do Cigar Rights Mean to You?” Contest

My answer is somewhat repetitive of previous posts I’ve done on here, but I feel it warrants repeating…..

The fact that we even have the terminology – cigar “rights” boggles my mind. I understand legislating the use of tobacco in public places, just as alcohol is not permitted in certain types of public venues. To ban smoking in a place that clearly is devoted to tobacco is just sick. Soon there will be no wine tasting events, no food samples at Costo!! For government to target businesses that clearly cater legal product to a specific market is just downright frightening!
But to actually have the need to fight for the “right” to smoke a cigar in my back yard just boggles my mind.
My cigar smoke dissipating down wind past a non-smoking neighbor is no more offensive than grill smoke from a thick juicy steak wafting through the vegetarian neighbor’s back yard. Are we banning grilling next? Will we have to fight for the “right” to grill? the “right” to eat meat??? Where the heck will it end???? Who the heck are these jacktards that are coming up with these ridiculous ideas??
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again……Once the chick won the lawsuit for spilling hot coffee on her own stupid self, common sense went out the window. There is no longer an expectation of personal responsibility. The expectation now is that people are incapable of deciding for themselves and “important” people must legislate what we should and shouldn’t do.
If you can’t stand the heat, then drink an ice cappuccino. If you don’t like cigar smoke, STAY THE H3LL OUT OF A TOBACCO SHOP!
If my business caters to smokers, then I’m accepting the fact that I may not have non-smoking customers…..and you know what?? I’M OKAY WITH THAT! I’ll be happy to clearly state that on my front door, windows, through loudspeakers if necessary to keep that unsuspecting non-smoker from “accidentally” entering my premises. (in the event they happen to be deaf, dumb, blind AND stupid….I’ll even have a front door check, for cryin’ out loud!!!)

Thanks Stogie Guys for a great contest….and an opportunity to vent!!!!

Perhaps, somewhere, people are starting to wise up….

As I was perusing through the headlines this morning to catch up on the world that I try desperately to shut out during the weekends, I found an article that stopped me dead in my tracks.

From ABCnews.com:

Health Groups Fume at Hollywood’s Continued Taste for Smoking

Health groups are fuming at Hollywood’s continued taste for smoking. A new study by the American Medical Association Alliance, the volunteer branch of the AMA, finds that over the past six years more than half of the movies geared toward children feature characters smoking. In more than a quarter of the movies, actors light up cigars. And officials say the Motion Picture Association of America has failed to deliver on its vow last year to weigh smoking in the ratings process. Among the latest…  “ Story continued

Nearly all the responses acknowledged the irony of these health groups whining about smoking instead of sex, violence, and poor eating habits!  Hmmmm…spend time with your kids instead of babysitting them with a movie like The Dark Knight with bizarre violence and story lines, foul language, nudity and a bag of fast food/snacks…so that you can shop Victoria’s Secret undisturbed…..then complain that someone lit a cigar in the movie in front of your precious little angel.

To my utter amazement, there are people out there-YES EVEN NONSMOKERS!-that have seen the light!  Of all the things our society subjects children to…..seeing someone smoke a cigar is probably not at the top of a real parent’s list of no-no’s.

Perhaps…….there’s hope for the intelligence of the human race (or at least America’s portion of it).

Strange times we live in….

I’m sure every generation has made that evaluation for whatever current events affected them….. Here’s my 2 cents worth on current events in the cigar world today:

From new cigar laws, to internet cigar community takeovers, to manufacturer buyouts, to strange and unusual manufacturer behaviors/bannings/collaborations…..
WTH IS GOING ON????

I know the economy is in an upheaval….with stocks plummeting and the rise and recent fall of gas prices…but geeez, Cigars too? Sure the cigar industry is connected to the economy….heck isn’t everything? But it seems as though the whole world is losing any semblance of sanity. The one place that always seemed removed from that chaos was cigars…a place to relax and escape the collective insanity. But it seems as though the insanity is beginning to leak in to our sanctuary.

The smoking ban is so freaking strange in itself. I understand the basic principle, I’ve always tried to be a polite smoker…but I know there are those who weren’t, which certainly didn’t help our situation. I understand that the non-smoking public doesn’t want to dine in a plume of smoke….hell I never cared to eat with smoke blowing in my face. I understand the potentially offensive smell of any smoke to a non-smoker. That being said, why would any self-respecting non-smoker, walk into a CIGAR BAR AND NOT EXPECT TO SMELL SMOKE????? You can’t legislate stupidity, but c’mon folks…..this is going beyond stupid! Has the general public IQ dropped?  Has everyone lost all common sense?  Don’t you want to just walk up to someone and say “Here’s your sign!”….

Davidoff buys Camacho….that perplexes me. Is Davidoff needing some of Camacho’s pump? Camacho has had some really excellent releases and sticks are consistently moving off the shelves. Davidoff? They have their exclusive customers that buy the spendy Davidoff sticks just simply because “spendy is trendy” when you have it to waste. Any other Davidoff purchases are usually “special occasion” smokes or by people who have more money than brains….and the brain matter = $1.98.

Why a not-so-large cigar manufacturer would piss off one of the largest cigar forums to the point of being banned is waaayyyy beyond my comprehension. One has to assume greed or desperation in such an action. When one takes a look at what forum with which they’ve a new collaboration…..it certainly doesn’t make their situation any more positive!!!!

One of the most perplexing things of recent events has to be the purchase of the big name cigar communities by Jon Caputo. No disrespect intended…but speaking from the cigar smoker’s aspect, who the hell is Jon Caputo????? What would could he possibly have to gain by trying to force these folks into a huge space on the ‘net? He claims to be a long time cigar aficionado….but is he? If in fact this is true, what makes him think he has the right to manipulate fellow cigar smokers in such a fashion. If his intent is truly benevolent….one might have expected a democratic offering? Or perhaps, like all the others who have put in the painstaking long hours to develop and nurture communities, he might have started his own and put out the invitation. Resembling our current political system….waggle a few dollar bills in a few unsuspecting faces and watch them tag along like Hansel and Gretel. Long time faithful members are jumping ship from communities they, in large part, helped establish. A bit abrupt, perhaps? Nothing, on the outside, has really changed yet on any of them other than the announcement. Many are staying on for that reason…and to see what might be coming. Those who have jumped, I feel sure, have done so due largely to feelings of betrayal and, perhaps, the concept of being herded like sheep into an arena in which they had no choice.
It brings to mind the segment from the movie Independence Day, where some are skeptical of any good that could come by a visit from an alien ship; some are undecided what to think, and those who are partying on the Empire State Building to welcome the arrival……and fellow fans of the movie know how THAT ended up!
The scenario,to me, resembles the general public’s views on smoking. There are those that see how people are allowing their rights to be invaded by government under the guise of “public health”. There are those that really don’t have an opinion either way…they’re not pounding the pavement in protest of smoke, they’re not protesting the laws against it, and they are not really seeing any real implication that pertains to them either way. Then you have the Anti-smokers. They are partying with every win in the political arena that bans smoking from any place one might exist…privately or otherwise…..not seeing the broader picture of what is at stake. Today they want smoking laws. What about tomorrow when someone doesn’t want people to own pets because they defecate outside where one might step. What about when they ban music because the volume affects ones peace and quiet or the lyrics mention flowers to be heard by people with allergies…….
I recently read an article by musician, Joe Jackson. http://www.joejackson.com/smoking.htm
I found this article inspiring, enlightening, and perhaps a bit scarey.
I suggest every smoker read this article. I’d suggest that every non-smoker read it too…and if you have the opportunity to encourage one to read it, do so! it is already a couple of years old…so you know that things are much worse now then even then!

I don’t know where this old world is heading….and I’m not sure what we can do to affect the destination. Cigar Rights of America appear to be making an attempt. Will their effort be enough? Even if everyone who would read this would run to sign up as members (the numbers more in question than the action), how much will it help?
The key, in my humble opinion, is not to look at smoking rights. It is a much larger picture and in order for any action to take affect, it needs to be taken on for a much greater purpose:  Everyone’s rights!
